Monolith Finds Good Home for Discarded Tires

In addition to wildlife, thriving crops and fantastic sunsets used tires were becoming a growing part of the vista on several county roads in southwest Lancaster County. As the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office works to determine who is behind the recent spate of illegal tire dumping, volunteers from Monolith gathered Tuesday, August 30, to collect the discarded tires and do some good with them.

Robin Burianek, a Hallam resident and Monolith’s community engagement specialist, led a team that collected over 50 junk tires from area roadsides. “Our cleanly made carbon black was developed to help make tires more environmentally friendly,” said Burianek. “When we heard someone was dumping old tires on the country roads surrounding our community, we had to act.”

And act they did. Burianek first contacted the Sheriff’s office to ensure on-site investigations were complete and it was okay to remove the tires. With a thumbs-up from the Sheriff’s office, the next call was to Uribe Refuse Services to see if they would take the tires into their scrap tire program to be repurposed. Once Uribe agreed, she assembled an employee volunteer group that included Jeremy Pierce, Tom Scdoris, Elias Karakatsanis and Mitch Reynolds.

“It was a true team effort,” said Burianek. “I didn’t have to look far to find people motivated to keep our environment clean and be a good neighbor at the same time.”

Burianek added that Monolith was no stranger to roadside clean-ups, as the company is beginning its third year as the Adopt-A-Highway sponsor of the 4-mile stretch of Highway 55H/W Hallam Road between SW 42nd Street and Highway 77.
